Dispel Your Writing Fears

by Rick on June 30, 2008

If you suffer from any of the following fears please raise your hand:

  • I’m not sure how to write what I’m thinking
  • I am not interesting enough
  • I do not have the talent that other writer’s have
  • I don’t know how to start
  • I’m afraid it will all be a big disappointment
  • I’ll never write as well as (insert name here)
  • What if everyone laughs at what I’ve written?

Do any one of these sound familiar? I can honestly say I’ve suffered one or two of these when I was first starting out.  The truth is there are five steadfast rules for solving the above dilemmas. It’s a secret so “shhhhh….don’t tell anyone”.

  • Identify and acknowledge your fear
  • Give your fear a light switch and turn it off (trust me - this works with practice)
  • For every fear there is encouragement. State the opposite and encouraging statement aloud (or write it down and pin it to the wall next to you)
  • Remind yourself that every writer has experienced one or all of these fears at one time or another
  • Write !!!!

The last bullet is my favorite and the most powerful antidote for any writing fear.  But remember, these methods are secrets and are not to be shared with anyone!

“Magic mirror tell me today, is Laurie’s hand up to stay?”
Well…….Maybe. I think I am doing a good job then I compare myself to others and know I can’t write like they do so I don’t….don’t write. I feel like a faker. A pretend writer. One where people will read what I write and say “Oh, hunny, but you smile really pretty!??” I feel like my best is average and I want to be better than that. I guess I am my own worst enemy huh?

I truly believe that we all feel that way at times, Laurie. The trick is to remember that we are all unique and we all have valuable things to say. Keep writing and never be afraid to share what you’ve written. You’re voice will come through and you will hit your stride. You have more talent than you give yourself credit for ;)
